I've been away a long while. I apologize. Last summer, I had a series of strokes that seriously affected my vision. I have had to rest them, and not spend as much time on the computer. The intense double vision has compromised my ability to sketch accurately, and I struggle with not being able to force my art where I want it to go. That and Covid has all but stopped the In-Person classes, workshops and conventions for now. So my Art has taken a slow turn. It seemed before that I was so busy developing new classes to teach and submit, that MY reason and focus became diluted. The long hours trapped in my head, resting my eyes gave me great insight as to how I wanted to move forward in the days to come as my vision continues to improve.

I have a more focused artist statement:

I find it important to be able to express myself and the things that matter to me in a passionate, if not chaotic way. I am concerned about the amounts of things discarded in our culture and delight in bringing life, beauty and fun back into cast offs, without overly explaining each piece. I love that the viewers can decide the narrative for themselves, as their own emotions and imaginations dictate.

Who I am:

Kari McKnight Holbrook is a published international mixed media artist, instructor and writer. Her style embraces lettering as a graphic, with texture and color also playing major roles in each piece. She expresses herself most often with upcycled fabrics, clay, junk journals, painting and jewelry. She enthusiastically teaches others how to successfully express themselves, and find joy in the process.

I am striving to:

Be present as I create, to enjoy and experience the processes. I an going to strive to overcome fear. The fear of not being "perfect," the fear of nobody liking my finished piece, or the fear of worrying when I will sell the next work. I am striving to put more of MY authentic voice into my pieces, even if they may not be of commercial interest. I will no longer listen to people tell me I am wrong for using products and mediums I enjoy. If online workshops develop out of this, I will go with the flow, and embrace it.

This is my accountability page! I pray you are all blessed and having beautiful creativity sessions.
The Backporch Artessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12778467933484271564noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252173948005892239.post-83208295594105225822021-09-16T00:07:00.005-04:002021-09-16T00:07:51.987-04:00I really miss Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine. The editors and other staff members I dealt with were always the epitome of professionalism. They were creatives in their own right and used their talents to let others of us shine. Here is just a little happy throw back to a free tutorial for Zen Doodled Jewelry that I did for them. Follow the link for all the deets and for step by step instructions.

The Backporch Artessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12778467933484271564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252173948005892239.post-51728315278216491812020-04-03T21:58:00.004-04:002020-04-03T21:58:50.601-04:00Back at it!Hello my lovely fellow human beans! Quite awhile ago, I decided to "blog without obligation." I didn't want to put stuff out there that didn't have a purpose. Didn't want to post "what I had for dinner" or "stuff I am randomly thinking about." But I have been hiding too. I have been really ill- with so many bouts of shingles I've lost count. Mike has had two major surgeries. Others in our world have been lost to us. All life, all pretty rough. But now life has slowed way down for so many of us. Mike is home a little bit more and we have made strides on getting my studio unpacked! A sink and toilet have been installed! I have donated at least 10 bags worth of clothes and household goods that were lost among studio boxes. I am down from 300 boxes to approximately 240. Slow, but progress. I have been teaching private lessons, and really love that. Tomorrow I am taking the day off from doing taxes to paint out on the deck. I want to put out plants, but don't want to go to the shops to get them. I have seeds from other years and am going to try those tomorrow as well.

Last year, I scavenged old worn out pots from my Mom and Dad. They had planted stevia and the groundhogs actually came up on the deck and scratched the pots to get to the plants. See the scratches from their toenails? (The groundhogs, -not Mom and Dads!)
I have been obsessed with florals lately! All the clothes I am attracted too seem to have floral motifs and the paintings that catch my eye seem to be floral- I caught myself looking at floral wallpaper and thought 'hold on now- you may have a problem!' I like florals a lot right NOW. in 3 years maybe not so much. I drew the line. But, as this little ditty popped up in my Facebook feed, I am reminded of how much my art changed when I came back from France and Giverny. Monet's splendid home set this floral fanaticism off. Here is one that I did, simply enjoying the process, and was actually very pleased with the result. Even the little bee seemed to enjoy it! As I have problems with bee stings, normally I do a crazy dance and run performance when I see bees, but on this day, I was so relaxed from the art, I calmly let him stay while I took the photo!

It's been a long strange trip since my last posting!
Mike and I have moved away from the farm, first to an apartment for a year, now finally into our condo! We love the new community we are in, and have made many new friends and neighbors.

I have had a couple shoulder procedures and Mike has had a couple of feet procedures. We have both had tons of acupuncture and Dr.'s trips. I've had shingles several times and Bell's Palsey 3 times. I haven't been able to see well enough to drive for over a year.

But we are one the other side of it now, and have survived 2 moves. It's been 3 months and we are still digging out of boxes, but life is speeding up. I have many teaching appointments coming up, and Mike has had 2 promotions and is working many many hours to get his new department up to speed.

The calls and visits and friendships helped keep us sane.

Health is better, and hooray, I have begun to drive a little, and Mike is beginning to get changes for the better at work.

I still won't be on here regularly for a while, as this is what I face in the studio. When you work from home it is like moving a home and a company all at one time.

But I will be back! I am excited to be teaching very close to home on a regular basis and in between unpacking I am developing new workshops! So when the studio is rebuilt, I plan on jumping back into the regular local workshops too.

Here is a sneak peek of a messy practice project I did lately that I will be sharing because I enjoyed it so much!
When Mike and I built our home, we had in mind dreams of entertaining and hosting friends and family. We are thrilled to have it happen more often, starting this Friday. Thought it would be fun to share a recipe each month with all of you, who I hope are finding more time to spend with your family and loved ones.
I am in the midst of menu planning for the kick-off! So far, I am thinking:
Italian Salad
Steamed Broccoli
Chicken Parmesan
Garlic Bread

Dessert
Cheesecake Truffles
We received an Amazon Echo Dot for Christmas, and I can't tell you how much I looooove it! I just read out the ingredients needed and tell Alexa (the dot) to add it to my grocery list! She does, and then she sends the list to my cell phone so I have it with me at the grocery. I also have a to- do list for making the dinner, and she will set all the timers for me. She even has dinner music to play that night! I am so happy about this new little hockey puck that sits on my kitchen counter!

Here is my version of Tomatoes Provençal (keep in mind I don't have an nth of Italian or French ancestry!)

I like these as little bite sized flavor pops. Instead of the traditional plum or larger tomatoes, I like to use cherry tomatoes.

Mix the following 4 ingredients:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Happy New Year!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Last year, I spent quite a bit of time soul searching, and re-focusing exactly where I want to go in my art life.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I have made up a word that I will use to guide me this year- "Doosit" Do/Use It.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The last two years have been quite difficult for me, at times I wasn't sure I would make it. But good friends, precious family and loved ones helped pull me through. They also helped me to see about myself that I had been so battered down for the last couple years, that I allowed fear to take control of me. The fear of being imperfect, and if I wasn't perfect, what people would say, or who I would let down. So fearful that I found myself not doing things until I could get everything just perfect.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Now as an instructor, I see this all the time in my students, where they are afraid to take the next step with their paintings. My training and education give me the confidence of how to help them, because I know what will happen when they move forward. But in my life, I don't have a vast amount of knowledge about the future, so I was hesitant. I have many many things I am working on, but always there was something just not right, and many times it was blocking my path. I was questioning myself so, that I didn't trust my instincts, and rather than attempt something and fail, and possibly end up in a worse position, I was hesitating. So no more!!! No more saving a project for a better time, no more saving an idea for a more relevant project.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I have found that my PASSION lies with sharing art with others. So more teaching is definitely in the future. I also have realized that yes- I enjoy doing the art videos, and financially they are important, but I LOVE teaching in person. While I will travel to some of my very favorite places to teach this year, I am also taking a very big step. I will be opening my studio to the public this year and teaching monthly workshops here. I will be able to offer wonderfully affordable workshops, as my travel, shipping and time costs will be eliminated! As an added benefit, I will be using all the supplies that are stored up, taking space in the studio, waiting for a future workshops. I am no longer waiting for venues, students who come to my workshops will find the supplies waiting for them here! I will get to take back some of my storage space! I know it will be fun and successful, because just making the decision made my heart feel lighter! In truth, this is not a New Years resolution, as I made these decisions a while ago. It just seemed like the perfect time to announce a fresh new direction.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">On the Workshops tab above, you will be able to find my current schedule for 2017. I am adding to it all the time. If you would like a private workshop for yourself and friends, please send me an email. I have more than 60 workshops developed in various different media fields, and would love to share them with you.

So excited to once again have an article in the new issue of ZenDoodle Workshop by Cloth Paper Scissors. So honored to be among so many fabulous artists, and to work with the awesome editors and staff! And a super shout out to MaryBeth Shaw of Stencil Girl, and designer extraordinaire Michelle Ward and their premo stencils that gave me a jumping off point!
Dealing with influenza then pneumonia had me down so far I didn't even realize I missed posting that I had 2- yes TWO articles in the new magazine by Cloth Paper Scissors, called Zen Doodle Workshop. It's such a fun magazine all about taking your doodles off canvas!

I was excited to challenge myself to find ways to really push myself out of the sketchbook! Both a jewelry project and an apron project were the end result. More great news! The magazine was such a hit that I just finished ANOTHER article for the next issue due out this winter-(coming sooner than any of us want to admit!)

In this class you will be rescuing a poor abandoned, dog-eared and
scribbled-in children’s book. You will breathe life back into it and
watch as it transforms itself under your loving touch. With dazzling
textures and subtle, yet dimensional colors, a beautiful butterfly of a
journal will emerge from the battered cocoon of neglect. With gesso,
crackles and mediums, we will delve into the daring world of adding
texture to our pages!

Kari McKnight Holbrook
will guide you as you develop a personal alphabet, and become
comfortable with the tips she’ll give you for the drawing and lettering
techniques. Special emphasis will be given to lettering and developing
your own visual voice as an artist. The process is so relaxing; you
might find it hard to stop with just one! To add to your collection of
these lively little books, you’ll find yourself haunting the thrift
stores, library sales and rummage bazaars! No drawing or calligraphy
skills necessary!
I am so busy these days, but it's all good! I've been working up new workshops, painting and creating and experimenting A LOT, and refinishing tons of furniture! I don't even have time to turn around most days. I apologize I've been a goon about taking pictures too.

So just to whet your whistle- I've been playing with new Premo! and Souffle' clays by Sculpey. I've been enjoying the vast array of DecoArt's new Media line of paints and mediums. I have jumped head first into Roc-Lon's multipurpose cloth! I have also been playing with Chameleon markers. And I've been combining all of the above!

A tiny bit of eye candy for you- Below on the right is what the clay started out looking like. With the addition of markers, varnishes and liquid glass.... they began to pop and explode with color!
I'm happy to say I have 10 whole pages in this new publication! 2 articles! One article on how to make an apron out of recycled jeans and Roclon Multipurpose cloth, and one article on how to zen doodle on clay and make jewelry! Since it is so new, it's been a hunt to find it on the shelves, but it is so worth it! Besides my own happy self there are TONS of great tips and other articles on all sorts of ways to turn your doodles into fabulous and useful pieces of art! If you want to skip the running, and just have them mail you one- you can visit the website here!

Mikey is holding down the fort here while Jen Crossley and I wing our way toward Petaluma CA tomorrow for Art Is You. It's been a flurry of activity cleaning the studio, getting ready for friends for Artiscape and doing a major booth overhaul for Harry & Annies'. Now 3 solid days of packing kits, picking up last minute supplies, washing clothes, packing, printing tickets, booking shuttles and cars. Last minute hotel arrangements for one night in a sold out city has been <strike>horrific</strike> fun....

But Jen and I are laughing and amusing ourselves if no-one else! And we CAN'T WAIT to see our students! We've had so much fun planning! Only 3 spaces left- for a one time only shot at our Birds and Blooms class live! Come join us!
So I've been hit by some challenges already this year- like finding out the CREATE retreats where I teach were going away- ( a significant chunk of my income, ) some health issues, my maternal grandmother breaking her hip and femur and the long recovery involved, and the worst was the loss of my paternal Grandmother. I would have a pretty dim view of what 2015 was going to hold for me, if I hadn't had some wonderful balancing FABULOUS things happening!

First, I've been able to see friends and family that I haven't seen for a long long time due to my schedule. It's been lovely catching up. Next, I've been able to just create and play. For myself, with no end result demanded. I can't tell you how important that time is to refresh my skills, my artistic soul. I have been creating for so long for workshops, for articles, for commissions. That's all lovely, but at times you feel as if it boxes you in rather than makes you feel creative. What I'm doing now is making me so happy and refilling my well of creativity. It is spawning new ideas faster than I can write them down in my journals. And oh yes I am filling journals for the inevitable dry spell that will come.
And some SUPER fantastic happiness coming to me from the good folks at F&W! Way back in September last year I worked on an article for Cloth Paper Scissors, and woot woot! It's in the January February issue of Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine! If you've never picked up a Cloth Paper Scissors magazine- you are really missing out! It never fails to inspire me, and the only disappointment is that it's bi-monthly, and I would LOVE it if it was monthly! Can't get too much of this goodness! Here is the CPS link if you would like to grab your own copy- you can even digitally download if you like! A super shout out of thanks to my beautiful niece Morgan for being my model! A quick snappy on the cell phone became a beautiful painterly mixed media portrait!
I am shaking off 2014 and lunging headlong into 2015! I am running non stop these days it seems. I have been so very busy lately! I opened a booth at Harry and Annie's in Washington Court House, Ohio, where antiques-uniques-rust and whim rule the day! Having such fun, I am set to open a second booth on Saturday! But it has required major time shift. I am still unable to be on the computer more than 5 minutes at a time due to my ear problems. That inner ear stuff can take so many weird personalities!

I have been hounding poor Mike to death to drive me to 50 errands a day it seems! A trip to the ER and a seperate trip to the Dr threw my tightly packed, carefully alloted schedule out the window. Grandma Waller is home with my Mom and Dad- just up the drive. She is making great strides toward being independant again- but 90 year old bones-hips in particular take their time mending. She sold her home, and bought a beautiful new condo. Imagine our surprise when after the sale we found it turned out to be friends of my friend Shelly who were selling:). Small, but beautiful world. Made us all feel good about the situation! I met the ladies today, and they were so very lovely, and it seems an instant connection to new friends!

Grandma McKnight is losing ground. Her poor body is withering away with the ravages of advanced alzehiemers. A brutal and insidious disease. Today Dad went in only to find she had developed pneumonia overnight. Odd that many many others on that wing have developed it in the last couple days too. More than a coincidence me thinks. We've been having issues- and we check in on her every day, but who knows what happens in the wee hours of the night.

Due to my inner ear, and still dealing with the eye situation somewhat- I've been restricted to resting for a few days. I find that sitting on the couch painting is just as much rest for me as sleeping!

And FINALLY today- I was able to pick up a copy of Jan-Feb Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazine to check my latest article! I am so tickled about it! I still get a thrill seeing it on the news-stands!

More on that front tomorrow!

The Backporch Artessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12778467933484271564noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252173948005892239.post-11687888172129535642014-12-03T16:00:00.000-05:002014-12-03T16:00:02.962-05:00A little something just for me! Polymer Fairy Houses

So, I've been running non-stop this year, and haven't had time to make many of the ideas rattling around in my head- so I took a day, and made something just for me! (Well, something I've been wanting to make, and something that I could share with Sculpey too.) As many of you know, I am on the Sculpey Design team. They are a wonderful company to work with, and I enjoy all the challenges they give us! They have been really a great source of inspiration for me, and I hope to share the fun with all of you!

I am fascinated with tiny. Small is BIG right now. Gnome homes, fairy homes, fairy furniture, fairy doors. But I have loved fairies since I was a little girl. I always liked small. Barbie furniture, elf furniture, sleeping bags, elf toys and elf gardens. I loved to re-purpose things even then to make tiny things. Spools and clothespins were always handy, lids and sewn little cushions and tables and chairs. Oh and tiny containers!!! Sigh....

So as a way of rewarding myself for not overeating this holiday season, I headed for clay. I spent a glorious fairly uninterrupted day making these little fairy cottages. Just for me. They serve no purpose, other than to make me happy. And they do!

If you would like to make your own fairy cottage, I spell it out step by step, with tons of photos over on the Sculpey Blog. Jump over if you wanna see!The Backporch Artessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12778467933484271564noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252173948005892239.post-83634527278784294232014-12-02T18:45:00.000-05:002014-12-02T18:45:53.320-05:00What I've been up to lately! It's been a whirlwind of travel and business upheaval! I no sooner get home from travelling and teaching, and I open a hearbreaking email that CREATE has chosen to no longer put on it's retreats. Which really suck, as I love love loved them! Great professionally run retreats. Maggie Reinholtz, Sally Slack and Jeannine Stein, and before her Jenn Mason hold the bar high for anyone wanting to put on a well run event! They all worked so very hard, and it just burns my biscuits that some suit somewhere didn't appreciate how life-changing these events can be, and can just axe a fabulous program!

That being said- if you want venues to continue in your neck of the woods yall- you have to attend in large numbers! Bring every friend, sister and cousin you can round up! Next year, I'm already slated for Dublin, OH, Minneapolis, MN, Stamford CT, and Petaluma CA. You can bet those venues will fill immediately with their limited seating!

So, as teaching is a huge part of my income- I spun my wheels for all of 5 seconds, and jumped at an opportunity I have had on the back burner. I have always wanted my own space in an antique/art boutique. My favorite place is "Harry & Annies" in Washington Courthouse OH. (Bonus, it's side by side with my Mom's favorite place "Memories Gate".) Because I have been on the road so much, it's been an impossible dream. So- I made a call, signed a contract, and began gathering art and antiques I've had around the house for a long time. I also made a few purchase at a local auction or two, and when I was on the road to TN to see family.
Mike hasn't been able to get down to see his family for about 2 years, so after a couple days home (not near enough to unpack) we loaded up the car for a week in TN. A great time was had by all, Mike, his Mom and I went to several thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales, and I found wonderful bargins for my shop space! At night I would work on paintings and developing future classes for next year. We ended the trip with an early Thanksgiving dinner!

We headed back up to the cold northern tundra, and on the way, stopped in to visit with the stellar gang at DecoArt! I have been playing with their new Media line for several months now, and could not be happier with what I have discovered. The new mediums and the new fluid acrylics are really something! I will be posting more on that soon! (with some videos!) After an awesome tour of the factory, and realizing the line was so much more vast than I realized, I couldn't have been floating anymore! My brain hurt all the way home with ideas!
The next day, we ran down to Harry & Annie's and set up the booth, taking a full blazer and a full pick up truck. It felt good to get the shutters out of the garage! Racing home, we realized we had to stop at the grocery- usually not a problem, but oh-la-la it was Wednesday night...5:30 pm Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. You can figure how that went! One poor woman was asking Mike how long she would have to thaw her 21 pound turkey before she could cook it the next day...I think she almost cried. Mike being the kind heart he is, took her over and showed her the fresh turkey breasts, and told her 2 would feed her guests....Home to make pumpkin roll and fresh cranberry sauce...
Thanksgiving came and we had a wonderful day! Grandma Waller was able to make the car trip in fine fashion from the nursing facility where she is recovering from a broken femur. Uncles and Aunts stopped by, and hearty games of SLAP were played! Food was eaten, thanks was given and the day ended way to quickly. Poor Mike had to go in to work early in the day, and ended up working a 12 hour shift but at least he got dinner first.
The day after Thanksgiving was spent at home, organizing, and unpacking and making art. No shopping was done! It was delightful!

The next day was back to my booth, as things had wonderfully sold, and I needed to add inventory! After that about 15 errands were completed, and several to-do's marked off my list!

Now I am happily catching up on life. Organizing and hoping for a slower pace, where I can enjoy family and friends!
However, on a stop to rest our legs at the Berea KY Arts and Craft center, I ran across the most fascinating artists polymer cane work! Artists James C. Rich and Diana Smith Thomas's work bewitched me. I don't know them and have never met them but I looked and looked and looked at their beautiful work, and made an agonizingly difficult decision of which pieces to purchase. I finally settled on this beautiful delicate pink pair. If you want to see more you can visit their web site at bspokendesigns.com or you can visit their facebook page at facebook.com/bspokendesigns.

I love love love finding new polymer clay artists, and their beautiful work, and I am THRILLED that it was SO available and SO visible at a wonderful travellers rest spot! What can I say? My bestie Jen Crossley and I have crossed over 7 thousand miles together since September 15th! (Not counting her flight over from Oz!!) We did over 2,800 of them in the car!

Here is the catch up scoop!

We started off with 4 days at The Country Living fair in Columbus, Ohio. Setting up a 10 x 10 booth, manning it for 3 full days, then tearing it down! Sad to say, the crowds were really really down this year. But we had a great time with our pals Shari Replogle, and Paula Marquis. We loved seeing our friends Lisa Ohmer, Jenni Bowlin, Jeannie & Dallas Carter!

We had only hours to tear the booth down, and then pack for the rest of our events. We tore through the house like mad women, and packed up suitcases.
We had NO sleep at all, and then before we knew it, we were on the plane to Dallas Texas for the CREATE retreat! Aunt Annies Pretzels and copious amounts of coffee were the rocket fuel that propelled us that day!

Dallas Create was a fantastic hit! The students were awesome, and
worked hard to make beautiful art- here is just a portion of my
Gelli-Print Joy class, hard at it!
The suits at F&W have had their beans counted, and, as per normal, we artists have fallen short of some magical mystical math equation. It was such a wonderful ride! I am proud to say I taught for each and every Create Retreat except for the very first, very small one in Chicago. It was a pleasure and an honor to work with the Interweave staff, particularly Maggie Reinholtz, Sally Slack, Jenn Mason, and Jeannine Stein.

t was a royal treat and downright blessing to spend so much time up close and personal with so many wonderful artist-students.
I do have to say the Dallas hotel was really "out there." It was the Night Hotel, very artsy, and very dark! Even in the brightest part of the day, it was dark and illuminated by neon and blue/green/red chandeliers!
So as soon as we landed, we had to turn around and go to the post office to ship the article and all it's step outs and finished pieces! Here's a sneak peek!
